Concepts of Biology
Biology is derived from the Greek words bios (life) and logos (knowledge). It is structured through the combination of these two words.
Physical Biology
In the branch of Physical Biology, theoretical subjects are discussed. Generally, the following topics are covered:
- Morphology: Description of the overall anatomical or physical structure of organisms. External morphology refers to the external description of the body, while internal morphology refers to the internal description.
- Taxonomy: Classification and systematic principles of organisms.
- Physiology: Biological-chemical processes of various organ systems in living organisms, such as respiration, digestion, and circulation.
- Histology: Study of tissues, their structure, organization, and function in organisms.
- Embryology: Study of the development, formation, differentiation, and growth of embryos from fertilized zygotes.
- Cytology: Study of the structure, function, and division of cells in organisms.
- Genetics: Study of genes and heredity in organisms.
- Evolution: Discussion on the development and evolutionary changes of organisms on Earth.
- Ecology: Study of the interrelationship between organisms and their natural environments.
- Endocrinology: Study of the function of hormones in organisms.
- Biogeography: Discussion on the distribution and arrangement of organisms in various geographic boundaries of the Earth.
Applied Biology
This branch deals with life-related practical subjects, including:
- Palaeontology: Science related to the description of ancient organisms and fossils.
- Biostatistics: Science related to biological statistics.
- Parasitology: Science related to parasites, their life cycles, and diseases.
- Fisheries: Science related to fish, fish production, fishery management, and conservation.
- Entomology: Science related to insects, their life, benefits, harm, damage, and control.
- Microbiology: Science related to viruses, bacteria, microscopic fungi, and other microorganisms.
- Agriculture: Science related to agricultural practices.
- Medical Science: Science related to human body, diseases, and medical treatment.
- Genetic Engineering: Science related to genetic manipulation and its applications.
- Biochemistry: Science related to biochemical processes in organisms and diseases.
- Environmental Science: Science related to environmental studies.
- Marine Biology: Science related to marine organisms.
- Forestry: Science related to forest, forest management, and conservation.
- Biotechnology: Science related to the use of biological systems for human and environmental welfare.
- Pharmacy: Science related to pharmaceuticals and technology.
- Wildlife Biology: Science related to wildlife.
- Bioinformatics: Science involving computer technology-based information related to biology, such as cancer research.
The Living World
From the time of Carolus Linnaeus until the mid-20th century, the living world was classified into two kingdoms: Plant Kingdom and Animal Kingdom.
With the advancement of science, R. H. Whittaker in 1969 proposed a Five Kingdom Classification based on differences in DNA and RNA, cellular characteristics, cell numbers, and modes of nutrition.
Later, in 1974, Margulis modified and expanded Whittaker’s classification. He divided all living organisms into two Super Kingdoms and categorized the five kingdoms under them.
Super Kingdom 1: Prokaryotae
These organisms are unicellular, microscopic, and possess primitive cells (without a well-defined nucleus).
Kingdom 1: Monera
Properties of Monera:
- They are unicellular, filamentous, or colonial.
- Cells contain chromatin material but lack nucleolus and nuclear membrane.
- Plastids, mitochondria, and endoplasmic reticulum are absent.
- Ribosomes are present.
- Cell division occurs through binary fission.
- Nutrition is mainly absorptive, but some perform photosynthesis.
Examples: Blue-green algae, bacteria.
